Born in America, I moved to Scandinavia in 1966 where I lived for over 20 years. In 1969 I bought my first Old English Sheepdog and have bred and shown that breed ever since. I was licensed by F. C.I. in 1975 and currently judge 165 breeds under F.C.I. including several Groups and Best in Show. My judging career has taken me around the world. In 1981, I judged Icelandic Sheepdogs for the first time… and have judged them throughout Scandinavia since then. I have been back to Iceland several times to judge in Reykjavik and Akureyri. My first judging assignment in Iceland was in 1985 at one of the first Icelandic Kennel Club shows ever held. My Best In Show was a beautiful Icelandic Sheepdog owned and shown by Gudrun Gudjohnsen. Over the years, Gudrun has become a dear friend and mentor. I am honored to be one of the judges at this first ISAA National Specialty weekend.

Saturday: October 3, 2009 8:00 a.m. Judges Education Seminar 10:00-12:00 Temperament Seminar with Brynja Tomer

About the Seminar – This seminar is an introduction to the Mental Test which was developed in Sweden several decades ago. At the beginning, it was used to find out which dogs were most suitable for the Army and the Police force. Today, the Mental Test is considered an important tool for breeders of different working and herding breeds in the Nordic countries. In the Mental Test, a describer will write down a dog’s reaction in several different situations. The dog’s reaction will tell if s/he is: Fearful, Aggressive, Playful, Sociable and/or Curious. This information can be very useful for breeders who want to know the mental status of their dogs and add the “temperament” part to their breeding program. The Icelandic Sheepdog International Cooperation (ISIC) oversees a special “Committee for Mentality and Original Temperament” in the Icelandic Sheepdog and Dr. Per-Erik Sundgren was responsible for formalizing the study of this important issue. For more information visit our club’s website, specifically: http://www.icelanddogs.com/Dr-Per-Erik.html.
