Before breeding your dogs you should gather the following information about them. (Check the lines on the left when you have completed each item.) Hip test results, elbow test results (recommended, not required), CERF eye test results, copy of the AKC, UKC, ISAA or FCI pedigree, current good quality photos of sire and dam, and the inbreeding coefficient scores for the proposed litter. This information must be on file with the Compliance Chair in order for you to advertise your puppies on the ISAA web page. Breeding females must be 24 months old and time of whelping and males must be10 months at time of breeding in order for their puppies to be listed.
Use the checklist below to help you keep track of what has been done. Keep a copy for your own records send one to the ISAA via email or snail mail. (See below.)
HIPS _____ = The University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program (PennHIP) hip dysplasia test results AND/OR _____ = Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) hip dysplasia test results
The OFA will do a Preliminary HD and Elbow Test before the age of two. At two years of age, the test will need to be repeated. The score will be: excellent, good, fair, borderline, mild, etc.
The PennHIP test can be done earlier than two years of age. Check with your vet for places to have these tests done. Females must have the test done before breeding. The PennHIP test, if done earlier, does not need to be repeated after the age of two. The scores we need to know are the Diffraction Index scores for the right and left hips. They will look like this: left 0.42, right 0.42. The numbers may not be the same for both hips. ============================================================ EYES _____ = Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF) test _____ = A copy of the CERF examination shall be sent to the Compliance Chair before mailing it to CERF.
Icelandic Sheepdogs need to have their eyes tested for inherited conditions. The eye tests need to be done annually before breeding. (Having the CERF test done in January of each year you plan to breed obviates further CERF testing during that calendar year.) ============================================================ ELBOWS _____= Elbow x-ray test results (recommended, but not required) ============================================================ PEDIGREE _____ = A copy of the Certified Pedigree from the AKC, UKC, ISAA or FCI country You only need to send in a copy of the pedigree for your breeding dogs once. ============================================================
MEMBERSHIP _____ = ISAA Membership is current and covers the period the litter will be listed on the web site ============================================================ PHOTOS _____ = A current photo, film or digital, of your adult breeding dogs Write the official registered name and the AKC, UKC, ISAA or FCI registration number on the back of film photos. Include this same information with all digital photos you submit. These photos will appear on the website so choose good ones. The film photos are non-returnable. ============================================================ INBREEDING COEFFICIENT SCORES _____ = A copy of the inbreeding coefficient scores for generations five through ten for the puppies of your proposed cross. The IC scores are available from the Tracking Chair and should be done before the planned breeding. _____ = A copy of the pedigree for puppies in the litter must be on file with the Compliance Chairs
When all of the above information is on file, we will post the web page for the litter shortly before the whelping date.
Current photos help sell puppies
After your puppies are born it is important to update their photos regularly. Some of us like to have an object like a dog toy in each photo so as the puppies mature, size comparisons can be made. You should have new individual puppy photos preferably every seven days.

Breeder Guidelines for Litters – Gentle Suggestions
_____ 1. You need to register the whole litter with the AKC very soon after they are born in order to get the paperwork for registering the puppies individually before they leave their birth home.
_____ 2. Use your kennel name when naming your dogs. Put the kennel name first. That makes organizing BreedMate, our data base much easier which makes the Tracking Chair's job significantly easier. We can spot simple errors in birthdates and sire and dam names quickly if they are all together. We can avoid duplications if they are all together.
_____ 3. Choose your puppies' official names before they leave their birth home. You can do this with or without input from the purchasers. Some breeders like to use the same first letter or letters for their puppies’ official names because it makes it easier to remember which litter the puppies are from and their birth year. Some breeders like to give buyers several choices and let them pick the final choice. Several members have long lists of good Icelandic names. Try to use less common names. That makes confusion over names less likely in the future. When you choose names, think of what the possible call names could be if those names are shortened. If you explain the difference between the “official name” and the “call name”, most new puppy buyers understand and accept that.
_____ 4. Fill in all the AKC paper work for registering the individual puppies. New owners are often confused about how to fill in the forms. They often are so busy with their new puppies that they never send in the papers. Including the filled out forms along with a stamped envelope addressed to the AKC makes the new owner's job easier. The more puppies that actually get registered with the AKC, the better. You can fill in much of the paperwork weeks before it is needed.
_____ 5. Choose the color from the AKC color list on the website that you "think" the puppies will eventually become before they leave. (The new owners can always change the color at the age of a year or so if they think it's necessary.)
_____ 6. Include a check made out to the AKC for registering the puppy or fill in the credit card information. Consider that as part of the cost of delivering the puppy to the new owner. That is the surest way to ensure the actual registration of your puppy with the AKC FSS. (Reminder: You must first register the whole litter with the AKC FSS and then the individual puppies must also be registered.)
_____ 7. We are asking breeders to contribute to a fund for rescuing puppies that were placed in a bad situation. This fund is intended for truly emergency use only. If a breeder needs to re-home a puppy, this fund is not for that purpose. We are asking for a $2.00 donation per puppy to be paid to the ISAA Rescue Fund. The cost per litter should not exceed $10.00 regardless of the number of puppies in the litter. More details will become available soon. A small percentage of the membership dues will also go into this fund.
_____ 8. PLEASE - Keep a separate list to mail to the Tracking Chair when the last puppy is delivered. (See below!) Frankly this is the hardest part of the Tracking Chair's job. It's all of these loose details that will make our records valuable for future generations. Keep a copy of this list for your records. You will be surprised at how valuable it will become to you.
ISAA Checklist for Litter Information
This is the information the Tracking Chair needs for both our ISAA registrations and the BreedMate database. This is also valuable for AKC records. The listing of future litter will be delayed if this information is not sent to the Breeding Review and Compliance Committee
