Two of the top agility Icelandic Sheepdogs in the United States treated attendees at the inaugural national
specialty to a demo and workshop along with their handlers Kathryn Ananda-Owens and Gail Donaldson.
Aldebaran Tisla (Viva) and Nosi listened, along with both canine and human participants, to Kathryn’s
description of the sport of agility before launching into action. Working on a small course with several jumps
and a tunnel, human participants had a chance to walk the course from their dog’s perspective, and to
consider various handling choices, subsequently demonstrated by Viva with Kathryn, and Nosi with Gail.
Humans were introduced to the notion of the dog’s line, and the ways agility handlers communicate and
shape this line for their dogs. Gail, who teaches agility professionally, taught the group several foundation
exercises, expertly assisted by Nosi. Handlers and dogs practiced restrained recalls, self-control exercises,
and sending the dogs short distances. The afternoon culminated with races for those teams brand new to
agility, and those with a little more experience. A good time was had by all!
